World War I

More than 380,000 African Americans served in the U.S. Army during World War I, including in segregated units that served in support roles and combat units. The 92nd Division, nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers," was one of two segregated divisions organized for the war, along with the 93rd Division, nicknamed the "Blue Helmets". The 92nd and 93rd divisions were all-Black units that served under mostly white officers.
