Collection: World War II

More than one million African Americans served in every branch of the US armed forces during World War II, including the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. More than 2.5 million African American men registered for the draft, and African American women volunteered in large numbers. They fought in the Pacific, Mediterranean, and European war zones, including the Battle of the Bulge and the D-Day invasion.
